Calendula

Calendula or calendula officinalis, more easily recognized as the marigold plant, is one of the oldest herbs on record used for skincare. Calendula extract is fabulous for most inflamed or irritated skin conditions and scientific studies have found that extracts of calendula with its anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-fungal and anti-septic qualities can speed the healing of skin wounds and burns.

The high levels of tocopherols (vitamin E), flavonoids and carotenoids in calendula offer great antioxidant properties with free radical scavenging actions to assist in the regeneration of new skin cells. Additionally, preliminary studies show that punicic acid (CLA) found in calendula may help to lighten skin and reduce the effects of photo aging.

The distillate (water distilled) form of the calendula plant, provides similar but gentler benefits for the skin as the oil extracted version. The aroma of calendula distillate is refreshing, soothing, sweet, and mildly floral. The distillate is perfect for use in a facial toners, moisturizers or in soothing and cleansing sprays for babies or those with sensitive skin.
