Dry brushing is exactly what it sounds like … brushing the skin in a particular pattern with a dry brush and usually before showering. This practice has been gaining popularity lately and with good reason. Dry brushing is even offered on the menu of many spas.
Dry Brushing stimulates circulation leaving you feeling energized and invigorated. It also helps to shed dead skin cells improving skin texture and leaving it softer to the touch. The added benefit of exfoliating the skin is that it clears oil, dirt and residue from the pores. This in turn prepares the skin for maximum absorption of moisturizers that are applied afterward.
Always brush your dry body before you shower or bathe because you will want to wash off the impurities from the skin as a result from the brushing action.
Use light pressure in areas where the skin is thin and harder pressure on places like the soles of the feet. Avoid sensitive areas and anywhere the skin is broken such as areas of skin rash, wounds, cuts, and infections. Also, never brush an area affected by poison oak or poison ivy.
Starting at the feet, brush the bottoms of the feet and up the legs in long, gentle, smooth strokes. Typically brush each section of skin 7 times. As a good rule of thumb, always brush toward the center of the body.
Repeat the same process with the arms, starting with the fingers, hands and brushing up the arms toward the heart.
Brush neck, shoulder and upper back with downward strokes. On the stomach and armpits, brush in a circular clockwise motion.
After bathing and while body is still damp, massage your skin with our organic, plant-based body oil to nourish both body and senses.
Clean your dry brush using soap and water once a week. After rinsing, dry your brush in an open, sunny spot to prevent mildew.
